Moving to Valencia brings sunshine, good food and a slower pace of life. It can also bring loneliness, stress or old problems that travel with you. When that happens, the last thing you want is to explain how you feel in a language that is not yours. This guide explains how to find a psychologist in Valencia who works in English, what to check before booking and what to expect.
Why therapy in your own language matters
You may get by perfectly well in Spanish at the supermarket or at work. Therapy is different. It is about nuance: the exact word for what you feel, a memory from childhood, a joke that only makes sense in your language. Research and clinical experience agree that people open up more easily and get more out of therapy when they can speak in the language they think and feel in.
What to check before you book
- Is the professional a registered psychologist? In Spain, psychologists must be members of the regional Colegio Oficial de Psicólogos. In the Valencia region that is the COP de la Comunitat Valenciana. Ask for the registration number: ours is CV09654.
- Is the centre registered as a health centre? Psychology centres that offer health services must be listed in the regional Registry of Health Centres.
- Does the therapist really work in English? Being able to chat in English is not the same as doing therapy in English. Ask how often they see English-speaking clients.
- Experience with your issue. Anxiety, couples, parenting, addictions… ask whether they work with what brings you in.
- Clear prices. You should know the fee and the length of the session before the first appointment.
How much does therapy cost in Valencia?
Private therapy sessions in Spain usually last 50–60 minutes. At our centre an individual session costs €70 and a couples or family session €90, both in person and online. Some private health insurance policies reimburse part of the cost of psychology sessions, so it is worth checking yours.
In person or online?
We see clients in person at our practice next to Plaza de España, in the centre of Valencia, and online by video call. Online sessions are the same therapy with the same psychologist at the same price. They suit people who live outside the city, travel for work or simply prefer to talk from home. Many clients combine both formats.
What happens in the first session
- You tell us, in your own words, what is going on and what you would like to change.
- We ask some questions to understand your situation and history.
- We agree on goals and how often to meet. There is no long-term commitment: you decide session by session.
Everything you say is confidential and protected by professional secrecy.
