Valencia is full of couples who met across borders: an Erasmus year that never ended, a job transfer, a holiday romance that became a life. Intercultural relationships are rich and stimulating. They also bring specific challenges that are easy to mistake for "incompatibility" when they are really differences in culture, language or expectations.
Where intercultural couples often clash
- Family. How often you see your in-laws, how much say they have, Sunday lunches, holidays split between two countries.
- Language. One partner always speaking a second language can feel tiring and unequal, especially during arguments.
- Roles and expectations. Who works, who cares for the children, how decisions are made.
- Money. Saving, sharing and supporting relatives can mean very different things in each culture.
- Raising children. Which language at home, which school, which traditions.
- Where to live. The partner who moved may feel they gave up more, and that weight builds up quietly.
Communication: the hidden layer
Every culture has its own rules about directness, conflict and showing affection. What sounds honest to one partner may sound rude to the other; what feels like respectful silence to one may feel like coldness to the other. Many arguments are not about the dishes or the in-laws. They are about feeling misunderstood.
What helps
- Talk about expectations explicitly instead of assuming "that's how it's done".
- Agree on a language for difficult conversations, and give extra time to the partner speaking a second language.
- Be curious about each other's family culture rather than judging it.
- Recognise the costs of the move for the partner who left their country.
- Create shared traditions that belong to both of you.
When to consider couples therapy
Couples therapy is not only for relationships in crisis. It helps when the same argument keeps coming back, when one of you feels lonely in the relationship, before big decisions such as moving countries or having children, or when language makes it hard to say what you really mean.
At López de Fez we offer couples therapy in English, French and Spanish, so that both partners can express themselves comfortably. Sessions take place in central Valencia or online. A couples session costs €90.
